Sworn Translations in France

In France, the only translators who can "certify" a translation are the so-called "traducteurs experts près la Cour d'Appel" ("expert translators for the Court of Appeal"). They are appointed by the French Ministry of Justice. These sworn translators are "legal experts" (ETI), officials who are authorised to confirm that the certified translation signed and stamped by them is a complete and true reproduction of the original document.

What does a sworn French translation look like?

Certified translations in France comprise the complete translated text, a copy of the original text and the formula confirming that this is a sworn translation, as well as the translator’s signature. All pages of the translation should be signed and stamped by the translator.

French institutions only accept French.

French is the only official language in France. No French institution will recognise a document that has been drawn up in Spanish, English, German, etc., unless the legalised translation is accompanied by the signature, stamp and correct certification of an authorised translator.

If you come to France from another country to study, you will need a certified translation of your academic qualifications into French in order to be admitted to the university.
